Engine Blew Up

2 weeks ago my daughter's engine blew up - the red warning light came on & she carried on :roll:

She's just had a reconditioned engine fitted, travelled 20 miles, and it blew up again! :shock:

Any suggestions? I can't make head nor tail of it. The only possible thing I could think of was that the garage forgot to put oil in, but this time there was no warning light. and when it exploded there was oil all over the road.

Not really enough information to answer properly Nick but,

Was the replacement New or Reconditioned or out of a Scrap car and what milage?

Was it a 'Short' engine, which means it is not complete and has all accessories missing, maybe including oil pump which would be salvaged from original engine?

If she paid a garage to sort it, get it recovered back to there (hopefully she paid by visa and then can claim through them if a problem) and ask them to rectify it, all businesses have to gaurantee their work for 12 months, trading standards.

The garage is owned by a friend, so she's safe anyway, but .....

It's a full reconditioned engine with 3 months warranty.

You can see why I am puzzled - the garage is too!

I am too, if the oil was on the road it must have started off in the engine?

Yes - I said to my daughter that the only thing that I could possibly think of was that the garage forgot to put enough oil in & she said there was definitely oil in it because .....

I was wondering whether some fault in the EMC could make the engine break itself, but I can't think of anything given that the valves are driven by a belt.

BTW it's a modern Mini Cooper 1.6

If an engine had an oil starvation problem it would seize, not necessarily let any leak out onto the road etc?

If it threw a rod it might puncture the sump?

If the drain plug was loose, etc ad infinitum

Where was the oil on the engine, must be some on the outside to show where it was leaking from, did the engine stop dead or slow down etc

Of course it may be a recon engine with a Bolt not tightened up, of just one that sheared the first time it came under stress.

I believe engines are a bit like Computer hard drives Mean time between gailure is X But X is a mean time so for every one that does twice X you can get one that does X/1000.

As an example I built a PC a couple of weeks ago at work, the machine worked fine for just over 1 hour and after that wouldn't boot because the hard drive failed catastrophically.

I only have the crudest descriptions. First time the engine "exploded" with lots of smoke & steam - she was on the motorway at the time. The second time was much the same, but less dramatic, but I think she was doing 30 - 50.

Ahh well if she was doing 30-50 it will depend on the length of string?

Ah she does know how to change gear she wasn't doing 50 in first !

The ECU is an unlikely candidate given what it does - largely monitor and make adjustments such as fuel/air ratio plus log fault codes.

Even cam-belt failure in contact engines normally only results in valve and ancillary component replacement.

Most likely is large, catastrophic component failure due to manufacturing defect or incorrect assembly.
