Most people trying to raise the profile of their website realise that once the basic SEO is done a blog is the next most important action. For anyone contemplating setting up their own hosted blog here is a brief guide:

Use WordPress 2.7 & above for the Blog
Do your homework first and read about others’ mistakes
Choose a professional theme
Remove unnecessary information from your theme
Add a favicon
Have an RSS icon
Install the Feedburner Replacement plugin
Channel your RSS feed through Feedburner
Organize your categories
Optimize the “About” page
Speed up your site
Check & Validate
Make sure your blog works in different browsers
Don't Install Akismet - it's included in WP 2.7
Install WordPress Database Backup
Install Google Sitemap Generator
Setup any needed 301 Redirects
Create a robots.txt file
Modify your title tag to be optimal
Offer email subscriptions (an option in Feedburner)
Add the Google Analytics plugin and track your stats
