Computer so slow it's hardly usable

Postby Lynda » Fri Nov 07, 2014 7:29 pm

My PC has been running very, very slowly for the past couple of weeks. Today it's almost unusable. I've got rid of as much clutter as possible but that hasn't helped. It took me ten minutes to get in to this group and a further five minutes to get to this section.

Any ideas, please?

Windows 7?

Do you have any Antivirus software?

If so I would scan for viruses.

Also try steps 7 & 8 from here when all else fails you can always do a system restore or factory reset.

Yes, Windows 7. AVG can't find any viruses. I did install and run Iobit Advanced System Care which has helped a bit.

I did the de-crapping last week and got rid of a load of junk. I use CleanUp frequently to get rid of temporary files. I don't think it helps that I need two browsers open when I'm working on Ancestry.co.uk. I have to use IE11 for that as Chrome hasn't worked with Ancestry since March last year but of course, I prefer Chrome and use it for everything else.

Try doing a system restore back to before you had problems.

Tried that, it didn't work - even in Safe Mode.

That's something I really don't want to do. :(

Good thought, thinking of Ctrl-Alt-Del & looking at the processes?

I have Zone Alarm firewall and AVG anti-virus. I've been using them in tandem for several years now without a problem.

I have seen an improvement since I scanned with Advanced System Care but it's still quite slow - but usable.

That question is too technical for me, Keith - sorry.

It's a Hewlett Packard 6205uk Intel (R) Celeron (R) CPU E3200 @ 2.40 GHz running Windows 7 64 bit with 3 GB RAM.

I have AVG free anti-virus running and Zone Alarm firewall - both of which I have been using for years.

Mmmmm - no point in having a 64Bit Operating System with only 3G of RAM!

Well you buy it & install it, but given that you have a problem with the PC right now there is no point going down that path.

Couldn't it be that lack of memory is the problem? Yesterday I got a message saying I should revert to basic colour theme as there wasn't enough memory to support what I'm using.

More memory will make the situation better, but it's wallpapering over a crack. If you press CTRL-ALT-DEL and then pick Task Manager this will run a utility which shows you what your PC is doing. If you click on the Processes tab it will show the individual programs running, and how much memory and CPU time they are taking up. You can sort the table by column and see what is taking the most.

There are 9 Chrome.exe*32 taking between 22,000 and 122,000 K. Nothing else is taking more than 1,000K.
