I usually have about four tabs open at any one time, Keith and that's what I had when I checked with Task Manager.

Chrome can be a huge resource drain if you have lots of extensions, and if it's having problems with Flash, but I suspect it's not the cause of your problems. The 9 Chrome processes represent tabs and extensions, if you close down chrome you should see them disappear. If one remains you can "End" it manually. If your speed returns, then you have discovered what is slowing your PC, but I suspect that it is something else. What process is using your CPU most?

The only one that is really high is one of the Chrome extensions - it's about 222,000 K.

I don't really know how the Chrome Processes work, but I think that is the main Chrome program that runs everything else.

There are 2 possibilities for your slow computer - either you are short of memory so the OS is paging memory onto your HDD and spending so much CPU doing this that it can't do anything else - or you have something installed that is hogging the CPU (possibly Malware).

It is possible to hunt the sucker down, but I can't help feeling that the simplest route is to save everything that you hold dear onto an external backup of your data and then restore you PC to it's original settings. TBH - you should be backing up all your data anyway so all this will do is force you to do something that you ought to be doing every day/week but probably aren't. I've Reset my PC several times - probably every 3 - 5 years - it's a great discipline - the Cyber equivalent of a Spring Clean.

I think I know what the "hogging resources" are. I'm currently not having any problems at all and haven't had for a couple of days. Before I went out this morning I tested with the Task Manager opening two pages of Ancestry with IE11 - I have to use IE for Ancestry because my Chrome hasn't worked with it since last March for some unearthly reason and also my genealogy software program. Between them they take up a lot of resources and I think this may be the answer. I haven't been doing any research this week and haven't had any noticeable slowness but on opening these things the slowness starts again.

If I want to do genealogy research there's not much I can do about these "hogs".

I checked your computer specification and it's not sensible to upgrade your memory, the motherboard can only support 4G - I really don't see why they manufactured a 64bit PC that can only take 4G of RAM!

Thanks for the help.

At the moment I'm getting message saying I'm running out of space for the amount I set and I need to free up some space. There was nothing to clear so the message keeps coming back.

I frequently do a disk clean-up. I think I'll have to lower the amount I entered.

I entered 4555 which was recommended but it's showing as 3037 currently allocated.

I'm still getting the silly messages which I now find easier to ignore but I'm not having slowness problems. Currently, I have five windows open in Chrome, one in IE and Family Tree Maker software too.

Perhaps I just have a temperamental computer.

Methinks just run Chrome or IE but not both at once.

I might have to do that, Nick. Thing is I've been running Chrome with IE for Ancestry for about 9 months perfectly satisfactorily. It's only the past few weeks that have been a problem.

Well setting your system back to how it was before that date should have fixed it.

System Restore on this machine has always been a bit hit and miss - actually more miss than hit.
